Palmetto Cheese Creates Jobs With Expansion Into Walmart

The homemade, southern style brand of pimento cheese adds Walmart to it’s distribution network and creates a ripple effect for all involved.

Pawleys Island, South Carolina April 18, 2012 – – Palmetto Cheese – The Pimento Cheese with Soul has added 699 Walmart stores; which brings the South Carolina based company to approximately 2,700 locations in 24 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri and Mississippi are new additions to the pimento cheese brand. The growth of the company has created jobs for product owner, Pawleys Island Specialty Foods, and their manufacturer, Duke Sandwich Productions. Pawleys Island Specialty Foods employs 11 workers; which includes demo staff, marketing personnel, and business operations. Dukes Sandwich Productions, based in Simpsonville, SC, has 20 current employees with a second shift starting April 16 that will add 10 new staff members to handle the increase in production. Walmart sampling demos will also subsidize 699 temporary positions to help roll out the product.
Duke Sandwich Productions staff
Duke Sandwich Productions started producing Palmetto Cheese for Pawleys Island Specialty Foods in early March of 2008. Back then, Duke was making 400 pound batches of pimento cheese every other week. As of 2012, production is exceeding 75,000 units per week. When asked what Palmetto Cheese has meant to Duke, John Mack, Executive Vice President at Duke Sandwich Productions, said “the numbers speak for themselves. It has provided an instrumental base in the development of a new 80,000SF facility to be operating in Fall of 2012″. Duke Sandwich Production staff handles the day-to-day manufacturing and packing of Palmetto Cheese for distribution. The company also handles online orders placed on Palmetto Cheese’s website.

The makers of Palmetto Cheese roll out OMG – Onion Made Goodness 0

Onion Made Goodness caramelized onion dip

Pawleys Island, South Carolina (March 26, 2012) – Pawleys Island Specialty Foods, the creators of Palmetto Cheese, would like to announce the newest addition to their product lineup.  Introducing OMG!  Onion Made Goodness. OMG! is a caramelized onion dip with a kick.  It is loaded with real onions and big on flavor.  You will get the same quality ingredients and authenticity that you’ve grown to expect from  Palmetto Cheese.  It can be enjoyed with a chip or as a versatile ingredient to incorporate into some of your favorite recipes. OMG! will make your dishes even creamier and tastier than ever before!

OMG! Onion Made Goodness was created by Pawleys Island natives Laura Tiller and Kelli Bair out of their love for food and entertaining.  Laura, as a single mom of 3 boys, started a home-based business providing dinners for friends and families in the Pawleys Island area. Kelli gave her a recipe for a caramelized onion dip as a potential menu item. It quickly became a regular offering and real favorite amongst her customers.  Based on this demand, the two friends decided to offer the dip to local outlets in the Low Country of South Carolina.
In June 2011, OMG! became available at Get Carried Away Southern Takeout, a new business in Pawleys Island, SC.  This outlet features many local products and OMG! became one of the best selling items during the busy tourist season. In order to keep up with demand, Laura and Kelli began to produce OMG! in the kitchen of Get Carried Away afterhours.
In an effort to expand OMG’s distribution beyond the local market, Laura and Kelli turned to Brian and Sassy Henry, owners of Get Carried Away Southern Takeout and Pawleys Island Specialty Foods.  They were interested in taking advantage of the marketing expertise, production resources, and distribution channels established through the successful growth of Palmetto Cheese.  Consequently, Pawleys Island Specialty Foods acquired an ownership interest of OMG in March 2012.  OMG! will be marketed, distributed, and sold under the banner of Pawleys Island Specialty Foods and offered to grocery stores throughout the Southeast.  We are proud to announce that OMG! will be available at all Piggly Wiggly stores throughout South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia by March 28, 2012.
Pawleys Island Specialty Foods is a wholesale food producer based in Pawleys Island, SC.  They are the creators and marketers of a popular brand of pimento cheese called Palmetto Cheese, The Pimento Cheese with Soul. Founded in 2006, Pawleys Island Specialty Foods continues to market their product line while identifying new products and assisting them to the marketplace by offering the production resources, distribution channels, sales relationships, and brand marketing expertise. Spring Pimento Cheese 0

Posted on March 21, 2012 by admin

pimento cheese serving tipSpring is here and we’ve come up with a Spring/Easter themed way of serving Palmetto Cheese – The Pimento Cheese with Soul at your next party, Palmetto Cheese Egg Basket and a PC Tulip.  To make this spread, we visited our local craft supply store.

Here’s a shopping list of what we used:
1 – small basket
1 – package small plastic Easter eggs
1 – package Wilton icing daisies
1 – tulip shaped cookie cutter, but you can use any flower or Easter shape you wish

From the grocery store we bought: One tub of Palmetto Cheese, eggs, radishes, alfalfa sprouts and cabbage.  Leaf lettuce can be substituted for the cabbage and any vegetable that you can slice a thin circle off of will also work for the radish.  Serve with your favorite cracker.
How to make the Palmetto Cheese Egg Basket

Spread one package of alfalfa sprouts into a small basket. If you’re using a larger basket you’ll need to purchase two or three packages.

We used one tub of Palmetto Cheese; which will make 6 small eggs. Large plastic Easter eggs can also be used. To begin, open the egg and spray each half with a cooking/baking oil spray. This will enable the pimento cheese to release from the egg mold.

Fill each egg half with pimento cheese until it is level with the top of the egg. Make sure that your PC is cold. If it sits out too long, it will be difficult to work with.  There are two ways to form the egg:

Press the two egg halves together to combine them and then open up the plastic egg. This one takes some practice.  Or you can simply shake out each half and combine them together. Smooth out the seam in the middle of the egg with a spoon or your finger. We found this way a little easier.

Add your eggs to the basket right after you unmold them.  We garnished our basket with eggs we dyed with food coloring and Wilton icing daisies.

Palmetto Cheese Tulips

For the tulips, we first lined a serving plate with cabbage leaves, but any type of lettuce or leafy vegetable will also work.
We made a batch of Palmetto Cheese stuffed Deviled Eggs to accompany our tulip, click here for the recipe. You can also make several tulips and one tray and omit the eggs. Arrange the eggs as shown in the pictures below and place a slice of radish to create an “egg flower”.

Place your cookie cutter in the center of your tray, fill with Palmetto Cheese and lift cutter straight up to reveal your tulip. Garnish with Wilton icing daisies. These can be found at a craft store that sells cake decorating supplies.

Introducing a new style of pimento cheese to the northern consumer 0

Posted on February 15, 2012 by admin

A southern staple truly expanding upon it’s origins. High quality pimento cheese delights northern foodies by being produced just like mom used to make.

Pawleys Island, South Carolina (PRWEB) February 15, 2012

Homestyle pimento cheese, a staple in the South, is a new taste for northern consumers. Go into any Giant Foods, Stop & Shop or Martins Supermarket and you’ll see a new product on the shelf, Palmetto Cheese – The Pimento Cheese with Soul. Ahold USA, a grocery store operator based out of Carlisle, PA and Quincy, MA, added Palmetto Cheese to over 750 locations. With the addition of Ahold stores, Palmetto Cheese is now available in over 2,200 locations in 22 states.

Pimento cheese impostors, those products that resemble an orange goo, have been prevalent on store shelves in the northern states for some time now. Palmetto Cheese sets itself apart by using premium sharp cheddar cheese, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and a unique production process that maintains the homemade texture. Palmetto Cheese’s spread beyond the South is due in part to tourists carrying the product back home with them and requesting the pimento cheese at their store.

“People have a very negative view of pimento cheese because they’ve never had real pimento cheese,” says Sassy Henry, creator of Palmetto Cheese. “Real pimento cheese is typically made by your mother or grandmother in your kitchen and this is the next best thing. It was made in my kitchen, so it basically is my pimento cheese, it just happens to be at your grocery store.”

Serving tips for Palmetto Cheese
Pimento cheese is a versatile product that can be served in a multitude of ways:
Use as a topping for steaks, hamburgers, chili, baked potatoes and salads
Add it to your favorite dishes: mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, roasted potatoes, casseroles, soups and chowders.
